Glen Lake History:

The area was known as the Glen Lake Station for electric streetcars and freight trains that began traveling between Minneapolis and Lake Minnetonka on train tracks built in 1881. The depot swelled with commuters and farmers taking their goods to Hopkins or Minneapolis, and Glen Lake Sanitarium employees. There are remaining traces of the line just west of Glen Lake, at the bridged entrance to Purgatory Park. During the 1930s, there were two grocery stores, a couple of filling stations, a post office, garage and barbershop. It’s said that during the gas rationing of the 1940s, traffic through Glen Lake was so light that a store owner’s dog often slept in the middle of the street undisturbed for hours. The original one-room Glen Lake School just east of Glen Lake on Excelsior Boulevard was replaced in 1911 with a new brick building containing two classrooms on the corner of Woodhill Road and Excelsior Boulevard. In 1946 Glen Lake School joined the Hopkins School District. After being purchased by the city in 1960 for use as a community center, it was torn down in 1990 to make way for soccer fields and a skateboard park. Today Glen Lake Station Park at the corner of Excelsior and Beacon Hill provides a focus for the commercial area. Nearby ball field facilities provide recreational opportunities for residents in the south Minnetonka area. Plus, existing and planned trails and sidewalks connect the area to greater Minnetonka, Eden Prairie and other surrounding cities. |
